But Nik Muhammad Nasyron Syah bin Nik Daud, the new Consul General of Malaysia in Melbourne, has a unique way of simplifying things. “Just call me Nik,” he says with a sincere smile that captures his friendly and welcoming nature.

Born in Kelantan, Malaysia, Nik’s parents instilled in him the value of perseverance and education. Despite not having a tertiary degree, they worked tirelessly to provide him with quality education. Every Mother’s Day, he pays tribute to his mother as the ultimate love at first sight since his birth in 1979.

Starting his career in the banking industry after obtaining a finance degree, Nik eventually found his calling in public service. With his experience in Tripoli, Prague, and Conakry, Nik has become a seasoned diplomat, promoting cultural diplomacy and overcoming challenges like the Ebola outbreak.

Now based in Melbourne, Nik is excited to strengthen the bond between Malaysia and Australia. He immerses himself in sports, eagerly following events like the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the AFL Grand Final. When not working, Nik indulges in his love for Japanese anime and manga, finding solace in stories of underdogs and triumph against all odds.

As he embarks on this new chapter, Nik’s dedication to serving his country remains unwavering. He believes in the power of mutual learning and improvement, sharing his experiences with his subordinates. With his warm smile and genuine demeanour, Nik is ready to leave a lasting impression on Melbourne as he forges new connections and builds bridges between nations.

Despite the extremely busy schedule for Choon Chong, EZ Australia was lucky to have some moment with this boutique firm, AscendPoint for a short interview.

What is AscendPoint?

AscendPoint (founded in 2011) is a Chartered Accounting firm and Registered Tax Agent based in exclusive Hawthorn – an inner suburb of Melbourne.

Who is Choon Chong?

A qualified Chartered Accountant, a Certified Practising Accountant, a Registered Tax Agent, a Master’s holder, an Entrepreneur: AscendPoint’s Managing Partner!

How is AscendPoint different from others?

It specialises in Property: Property Developers, Real Estate Agents, Property Investors: local and foreign. And, it is a 1-stop shop for all facets of business accounting, taxation including compliance (such as lodgement of tax returns), tax planning and advice for Company, Trusts (family, discretionary, unit), Individuals, Partnerships and Self-Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSF).

What makes it really stand out from the “rabble” is Choon’s unyielding passion to solve a client’s issues no matter what and to bring this further forward by highlighting value-adding opportunities that clients didn’t even know existed.

What is the biggest challenge your clients are facing?

Obviously, to pay taxes! However, when clients pay taxes, it actually means they have done well, and are profitable. Hence, our role is to help them to navigate the Tax Legislations, through effective tax planning, saving them taxes legally.

What are your plans for the future?

We aim to open branches in other locations in Victoria as we expand our reach to more clients. We are excited because from our clients’ testimonials, we know that our service proposition sticks well with them.

We are also venturing into the Personal Finance Management space and will soon be launching ‘moneyvase’ which will help users to take control and grow their wealth. Stay tuned!

Does your company engage in Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives?

In Australia, we are definitely considered a lucky country, and hence we always want to give back to the community. We work with charity organisations for instance the Dana Charity Group who have similar aligned values.

Sitting in his Melbourne home in 2008, contemporary Australian artist John Young Zerunge AM was surprised by a phone call from 10Chancery Lane Gallery, Hong Kong, informing him that the curatorial team from M+, Hong Kong’s premier new Museum, yet to be built, had arrived unexpectedly to purchase almost the full suite of Young’s work. 1967 Dispersion, as the exhibition was titled, dealt with the year of Young’s departure from Hong Kong as he travelled to Australia.

Since then, Young, now Australia’s most senior Asian artist, has spent a four-decade career as a painter and installation artist investigating the condition and experience of bi-culturalism. These investigations have generated major exhibitions globally, including representing Australia at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York and major travelling exhibitions around Asia. Young has permanent installations in institutions spanning Germany and Japan, the National Library in Canberra, and the Grand Hyatt in Hong Kong. Throughout it all, he is devoted to multicultural advocacy as an artist towards regional development, working closely with Australian institutions to develop an infrastructure and public for Asian art in Australia. He was instrumental in establishing the 4A Centre for Asian Art, Sydney in 1995 and over the last decade has delivered the first visual history of the Chinese in Australia since 1840.

Young’s efforts have been widely acclaimed. In 2021, he was featured in the culminating chapter of art historian John Clark’s magisterial opus The Asian Modern (2021), and in 2020, conferred to the Order of Australia (AM) in recognition of his contributions to Australian visual art.

John Young’s works were recenty on show at Bunjil Place Gallery, Victoria, in the survey exhibition Diaspora, Psyche and The Shiva Paintings at Philip Bacon Galleries, Brisbane.
