Kim Lowman

Founding Principal – Director of Rothelowman Architects

Rothelowman Architects

After working briefly in Hong Kong, Rothelowman Architects’ founding principal and Director, Kim Lowman returned to Australia in 1991 to conquer Australia’s architecture world. With over 155 employees across offices in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney as well as international clients from China; Rothelowman Architects is a prominent name that has often been referred to as a paragon of the Australian architecture industry.

Kim believes that the secrets to Rothelowman’s success is a clear business development strategy, flexibility and employing talented and trustworthy employees.

“Our edge comes from the fact that we have repeat clients, a state-of-the-art design process, a thorough understanding of the factors that impact the wider property industry, a willingness to innovate design solutions and a commitment to staff and research”, said Mr Lowman.

As architectural and design studios generally require a suite of compatible skills across all aspects of a project’s delivery, Mr Lowman stresses the importance of impeccable communication skills and nurturing learning environment that is embedded into Rothelowman’s graduate programme.

With a diverse range of projects varying from $5 million to $600 million AUD and a fully integrated design studio led by international designer Matthew Dalby; Rothelowman is fully equipped to maintain an exemplary standard of quality for every project.

“We strongly encourage clients to discuss a site prior to acquisition. It’s generally a partnership approach that converts feasibilities into realities. The notion of an inspirational idea responding to a site that is viable, responsible, and timeless excites us.”

When asked about the challenges Rothelowman faces, Mr Lowman said,” Embracing change is everyone’s challenge. As economic conditions change we make it our business to explore new building typologies to suit a market”.

Mr Lowman strongly emphasised the importance of working with all stakeholders towards achieving a satisfactory outcome for each party and praised the merits of institutions that reward innovation.

“We strongly encourage clients to discuss a site prior to acquisition. It’s generally a partnership approach that converts feasibilities into realities. The notion of an inspirational idea responding to a site that is viable, responsible, and timeless excites us,” said Mr Lowman.

Despite it not being a large project, Rothelowman is most proud of their award-winning work on the “Pillar of Hawthorn” – a respectful interpretation of the rich heritage and timeless nobility that defines Hawthorn. Sandwiched between a heritage church and sensitive interfaces with neighbouring residents; this project resolves all constraints with clarity and lifts the experiences of neighbours, pedestrians and future inhabitants of Hawthorn.

Mr Lowman is excited about the future and believes the best part of his career lies in a journey of constant learning, joy and passion for one’s craft.

Kim Lowman

Despite it not being a large project, Kim is proud of one of their award-winning works “Pillar of Hawthorn” – a respectful interpretation of the rich heritage and timeless nobility that define Hawthorn. Ardently adamant and meticulous in design, the penthouses of Pillar provide a warm array of designs that fully maximise the ability of natural light to complement its apartment’s features.

A complex projection on many levels, the height and proportions compliment the contours of the street podium to allow inhabitants to enjoy spectacular views towards the city over its heritage roofs. The eastern laneway is activated by careful consideration which addresses this intimate frontage. Landscape and pavement improvements, further lift the pedestrian experience, continuing Melbourne’s fascination with laneways.

Inside the Pillar awaits generous, luxurious living spaces one would be proud to call home. This project, by Miura Group, certainly has considered the well being of its residents and will create a development which has the community in mind.

Mazita Marzuki

Consul General of Malaysia in Melbourne, Australia

Malaysians in Melbourne are in for a treat.  There is a new sheriff in town, and she is the epitome of the intelligent, progressive and charismatic leader that every nation should be proud of.

The new Consul General Mazita Marzuki took her chair at the Consulate General of Malaysia in Melbourne just two months ago and she’s already riding on the crest of the waves she created. “I’m lucky to be assigned here. Melbourne has a lot of soul, diversity, culture and she’s a vibrant city that holds so much potential and importance for Malaysia.”

Prior to Melbourne, Mazita was the Deputy Head of Mission and Counsellor of the Embassy of Malaysia in Abu Dhabi, UAE. “Abu Dhabi is such a luxurious cosmopolitan city.  One can get totally immersed in it.”

I love being in the public service. It is where one can effect change.

However, she did leave a bit of her heart in San Francisco where she spent four years working and attaining her master’s in Human Resources Management and Development at the Golden Gate University. She picked up an Outstanding Student Award and was the recipient a Leadership Award while doing her Diploma in Public Administration prior to the beginning of her career as a public and administrative officer. “I love San Francisco. I have many good friends there.”

Promoting the highest level of political, economic and social relations between Malaysia and the state of Victoria, this true-blue Malaysian is responsible for trade and investment exchange, dissemination of Malaysian government policies, providing protocol, immigration and consular services.

Mistakes are the best guru in life.

She was also the Deputy Director General of the Southeast Asia Regional Centre for Counter-Terrorism (SEARCCT). In 2018 SEARCCT’s military operations saw to the mass territorial defeat of jihadist militant group Daesh in Syria and Iraq. “While Southeast Asia is seen as an emerging hotspot for terrorism, Malaysia remains steadfast in her commitment to counter-terrorism and the prevention of violent extremism.  Realising the impact of the Internet and social media platforms, SEARCCT aims to create awareness before indoctrination in order to prevent radicalisation.” With the recent change of government, Mazita believes that Malaysia is in good hands. “Change takes time. Give this new team a chance to prove themselves,” she urges.

On the home front this powerhouse is a loving wife and doting mother to two teenage sons, Iman and Ammar Mirza. “I have a rare gem of a husband, known as Mr Zack to many, who is fully supportive of my career and the empowerment of women. And I’m proud of my two sons who are equally adept at handling our diplomatic lifestyle.”

Not one to dwell on the past or the negative, this career diplomat sees only opportunities and advantages. “Mistakes are the best guru in life. Don’t be afraid to make and learn from them.”

Well, if Malaysia is looking for future prime ministerial candidacies, Mazita Marzuki would certainly earn many Ayes!

Mazita Marzuki

Ping Chng
CEO of CHTNetwork Australia

Recently calling Melbourne home, Ping Chng first arrived here in 1997 to study law in Monash University. Falling in love with Melbourne at first sight, she enjoyed her Australian university life but went back to Malaysia to build her legal career.

“Everything starts from the first step.”

Her first six years were spent in litigation before moving on to corporate law and eventually settling in conveyancing. With 20 years of law practice in Malaysia, she is still attending to Malaysian clients in the areas of conveyancing and corporate law.

January 2018 marked her milestone move to Melbourne. Malaysia’s loss is Australia’s gain. With a heavy heart Ping left behind family, friends and a successful career in Malaysia to embark upon her new journey in life. Equipped with top class legal expertise and a wealth of experience and wisdom, it wasn’t long before she was admitted as a lawyer in the state of Victoria. “Everything starts from the first step. This new chapter of my life is not going to be easy, but my mind is set, and I’m determined to make this crucial journey a successful one.”

Putting her legal career on the back burner and re-inventing herself, Ping added dimension and diversity to her portfolio. Diving into the world of publishing, this multi-talented individual took up the position of chief executive officer with CHTNetwork, a publishing company set up by her brother Ch’ng Huck Theng in Melbourne, Victoria. Championing and celebrating the good things in life, Ping is now heading EZ Australia magazine with extensive online and hardcopy subscriptions. She is also managing the CHTNetwork office, promoting the company’s art gallery and art/event space in Collins Street. Running CHTNetwork, producing the EZ Australia magazines and immersing herself in the art industry and the lifestyles of the rich and famous, the worthy and the artistic, has propelled Ping into the upper echelons of Melbourne high society. Modestly she claims that, “Every day is a learning process for me.”

“Always let go of the past and live in the now.”

In retrospect the move did not come without challenges. Juggling between her business, social duties and family life in a new country can be trying and demanding, at best. Always a trooper, Ping remains optimistic and persistent in achieving her goals. Born into a family which has been in the food manufacturing and retail business for 165 years, she has always believed in credibility, being fair and genuine in life. Her stronghold on values have won her many acquaintances, school mates and clients who have evolved to become good friends and business partners even.

One will always know where one stands with Ping as she is honest to a fault, principled and shares her views and comments sincerely. Commanding respect and admiration, she has always strived for the best in all her endeavours. A compassionate and loving personality, she firmly believes in friends and family, and is extremely grateful for all their support and love. “Always let go of the past and live in the now.”

Ping also holds a fascination in property investment. Coupled with her legal background and a keen eye for interior design, Ping has displayed quite a good track record in property investment for the last 10 years. One of her goals in this new chapter of her life is to become a successful property developer in the beautiful and bountiful land down under.
