Since time immemorial, civilisation has often worshipped beauty and symmetry – Cleopatra, Adonis, Aphrodite, the Four Great Beauties of Ancient China – Xi Shi, Wang Zhaojun, Diaochan and Yang Guifei, are some of the immortalised perfections.

These days, however, even if one does not win the genetic jackpot, many worthy consolation prizes lie within modern medicine and procedures. One such entity is the award-winning Dr Tass Cosmetic Enhancement owned and led by Dr Tass Tasiopoulos. One of Australia’s leading cosmetic medical specialists, Dr Tass practises non-surgical procedures from his cosmetic clinics in Port Melbourne, Elsternwick, Toorak and Crown Spa Melbourne.

Born in Melbourne to migrant parents, young Tass led a fun and loving childhood. “My parents have always believed and instilled in us, the great value of education. We are a family that does not believe in limitations.”

Many women would be happy to know that Dr Tass did not pursue his earlier interest in architecture but chose instead to do medicine in Monash University. “As a teenager I was wearing different hats. I was the cool kid amongst my friends. At home I was the perfect child. If my parents knew what I was like in school I would have been belted or given the backhand.”

“Cosmetic medicine is a fashion statement and lifestyle trend now. I am no longer just practicing medicine, I’m very aligned with Dior, Vogue and the way society has evolved.”

After his hospital residency Dr Tass started working as a general practitioner. “Loved it because the job was varied and stimulating. I loved talking to my patients who sometimes had to wait two or three hours to see me. Sadly, after 12 good years, it got boring for me. I was seeing the same conditions repeatedly. Loved the people but was no longer stimulated.”

That was when his personal practice shifted to the world of cosmetic medicine. After attending a barrage of courses in London, France, the Philippines and USA, Dr Tass set up his multi-disciplinary cosmetic clinic. “When the world of cosmetic surgery was at its infancy, there weren’t great standards. It was like the Wild West. A lot of people walked around with frozen faces and massive cheeks.”

To date Dr Tass has performed over 60,000 procedures on people from all strata of society. “Each face is like a canvas to the artist and optimal aesthetic results can only be achieved through quality products, techniques and the artistic capacity of the doctor. High standards, safety measures and attention to detail are of utmost importance too. You’re only as strong as your weakest link.”

Cosmetic medicine is a dynamic one-billion-dollar industry in Australia. “Even so I still think we are in pioneering days with a lot of potential for growth. I get excited when I push boundaries. Cosmetic medicine is a fashion statement and lifestyle trend now. I am no longer just practicing medicine, I’m very aligned with Dior, Vogue and the way society has evolved.”

This happily married man with four kids says, “I’m very lucky. I love my beautiful wife and kids. I love being a family man.  My life is glamorous but contained.”

However, Dr Tass has no time for flaky or entitled behaviour but devotes many hours to weight and cardio training, and charity work. “I firmly believe people who are wealthy have a duty of care to the less fortunate.”

The year 1967 was an exciting one for Australia. The new five-dollar bill had just been launched and Johnny Farnham released the song ‘Sadie’. Equally exciting for the young Penang-born Malaysian Andrew Lee who came to study Computer Science at the University of Melbourne. Upon graduation, Lee got a job as a computer programmer with ANZ Bank. The respectable and eligible bank officer soon met the love of his life Evelyn. They married, raised two children, Walter and Belinda, and soon settled down to the idyllic Australian lifestyle as citizens.

“Developers who are willing to work with the State Planning Department and councils will always find a smoother path towards the approval of their building permits.”

Keeping a keen eye on Melbourne’s real estate, this smart and industrious man read and anticipated the growing market. “I borrowed heavily and invested in two properties in South Yarra and Carnegie. At that time, the entire block of 15 apartments in South Yarra was only around $200,000.”

After 15 diligent years in Australia he owned two beautiful homes, two cars and a thriving company – Andrew Lee and Associates – dealing in property investment and development. However, life had more in store for him.

“Through a forum, developers can work as a group in achieving things which the lone developer cannot.”

In 1982 Lee made a trip to Singapore to secure a consultancy contract from the National Computer Board of Singapore. So impressed were the board of directors, they offered him the acting director position. He swapped his spacious homes and two cars in Australia to live in an HDB flat in Singapore for a brief spell. “I had been thinking of returning to that region for some time and I was excited at the prospect of contributing to one of Asia’s most ambitious computerisation projects.”

Even then, Lee’s heart never left Melbourne and after successfully wrapping up the NCB project in Singapore, Andrew and his family moved back to Melbourne.

Today Lee works with various property development companies, consulting and translating his 50 years of real estate knowledge into huge profits for his shareholders. He is also a great advocate for developers’ forums. “Through a forum, developers can work as a group in achieving things which the lone developer cannot – like collectively negotiating – better commission rates from real estate agents, with the government for better building legislation, and with workers’ unions.” Wearing his heart on his sleeve, Lee is a member of the Advanced Investors Group, comprising more than 60 developers from Melbourne, who meets four times a year to discuss mutual interests.

Diana Chan
Winner of MasterChef Australia 2017

It’s all about pushing boundaries. Do something different. Don’t be safe.

The little girl watched as her mother cooked, brewed and worked the wok in the kitchen, surrounded by herbs and juicy ingredients. She was never allowed to do the important tasks or even near the bubbling stove. As she stood there watching and absorbing with her big and beautiful eyes, nobody would have guessed she would one day take the grand trophy of MasterChef Australia 2017.

The air was galvanised when one million viewers watched judge Matt Preston award Diana Chan 9/10 for her dessert, just one point ahead of her toughest competitor. As the confetti rained down, Diana Chan, MasterChef Australia 2017 held the trophy jubilantly in her hands.

“I’ve always loved food. Mum is a Nyonya (Straits Chinese) from Singapore, while Dad and grandma are from Penang, Malaysia.”

At 19, Diana landed in Melbourne to pursue her tertiary education in accountancy. “I had a good palate and I wanted to enjoy great food but could not afford to eat out all the time. So I headed out to Camberwell market and immediately fell in love with the fresh produce, the sights, sounds and aroma of the market. I got very inspired. Didn’t know how to cook but I never stopped trying until I got better. Watching a lot of cooking shows helped too.”

While her true inspirations are her parents, Diana quoted a few favourite chefs. “I watch a lot of Yotam Ottolenghi. He reminds me of my mum who is herb-driven and uses a lot of vegetable. Simple to replicate but very tasty. George Calombaris is a progressive chef, who is very passionate about his restaurant The Press Club while I learned how to try different things from Anthony Bourdain.”

Remember your core values and be proud of your heritage.  People can see through you if you are trying to be someone else

Diana wooed MasterChef judges with her spatchcock and abalone in green juice, oatmeal prawns in creamy curry sauce and a near-perfect creation of the Kirsten Tibballs dessert. “I just broke down and cried after my last cook. The pressure was so high, I was overwhelmed.”

To all the 2018 contestants, “It’s all about pushing boundaries. Do something different. Don’t be safe. At the same time, manage your expectations. And I always say get a lot of sleep. The hours are long and mentally stressful, as in any winning kitchen.”

Basking in the light of champions, Diana sees a restaurant in the pipeline. “Three things resonate with me – wholesome, fresh and fusion. These are the things I look for in a dish. I want to have a lot of input in the menu so that people can associate me with my food. With my accounting background, I plan to manage the business side too.”

While taking in all this publicity and success, Diana is also quick to give back to the society. Close to her heart is beyondblue, a non-profit organisation working to address issues like depression, anxiety disorders and related mental disorders.

“My dad’s best friend once said to me, ‘Never lose your compass’. Never forget who you are and where you come from. Remember your core values and be proud of your heritage. People can see through you if you are trying to be someone else.”
