Flight of the Titan

Rimowa’s Dieter Morszeck built a replica of the first all-metal aircraft – F13 Junkers. The classic Swiss Alps,  famously known for its high peaks, sheer valleys and cool peaks, saw the launch of the ‘mother of all commercial aircraft’ the Junkers F13 – a replica of the legendary official first flight that flew over Dübendorf Switzerland almost 100 years ago.

Initiated by the Association of Friends of Historical Aircraft (VFL), the project saw the partnership between JU-AIR, VFL and Rimowa that took seven years of research, planning and approvals before its maiden flight.

Rimova, one of Europe’s leading luggage manufacturers known for its corrugated-aluminum hard cases, uses grooved sheet metal for over 60 years in making its product, which was also a material that became a hallmark of Junkers aircraft. This affiliation went a step further seeing Rimowa sponsoring the construction of the first airworthy F13 replica.

Annelise 2 was the name given to the aircraft as a salute to one of the first Junkers F13 planes ever to fly commercial. It blazes a trail in modern-day passenger aviation as the world’s first all-metal commercial aircraft to have recorded an altitude of 6,750 meters in 1919.

Those who attended were wowed with the aviation technology of the past that saw the engine delivered 450 hp with a cruising speed of 176 km/h. A live screen on the airfield displayed live images giving onlookers a real life experience directly from the cockpit.

Imperfect Creation-Debuts in Melbourne

Art can be a lot of things – indulgence, sustenance, a basis of pleasure or disappointment, and a trigger that affects our minds and ultimately how we communicate with people around us. The power of art transcribes founding ideas and expands the originals to launch a creatively neutral sphere for admiration whether it is of beauty or aberration.

‘IMPerfect Creation’ is award-winning Asian contemporary sculptor Ch’ng Huck Theng’s first solo bronze sculpture exhibition in Melbourne, Australia. The exhibition presents 11 timeless bronze works created by Ch’ng, each carrying its own unique story, meaning and philosophy inspired by different people and events surrounding the artist.

“IMPerfect Creation”

Through this exhibition, Ch’ng introduces a new perspective to the concept of beauty and the grotesque; in which beauty cannot be seen if one cannot identify ugliness. The artist’s ‘Ugly’ bronze sculptures depict current events that encourage the public to look deeper into their hearts and souls when faced with issues.

Ch’ng is currently one of the leading artists and sculptors in Malaysia. Year 2016 marks his 22-year career as a successful artist – setting an artistic precedent on the international platform and to those who recognise his progressive work. His works are not only collected in Malaysia but around the world by respected institutions, which include the National Visual Art Gallery Malaysia, Singapore Art Museum, Hong Kong University Museum & Gallery, Shanghai Art Museum and Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA) in Paris.

Ch’ng’s bronze creations have been hammered off in local and international auction houses, attracting high-end buyers and setting impressive sales records. The artist’s works were also selected to be presented as national gifts to countries including China, London and Melbourne.

Rupert Myer AO, the Chair of the Australia Council for the Arts has been invited to be Guest of Honour to officially inaugurate the exhibition. The highly anticipated exhibition is set to be held at SpACE@Collins, Level 1, 278 Collins Street from 20 October to 12 November 2016, weekday 11am to 5pm and Saturday 11am to 3pm.

Serengeti-Africa the Other World非洲迷情:新天地

With a visceral passion for photography and a genuine desire to foster the talents of today’s youth, David Liao embraced the opportunity to nurture the raw talent that is Ben Battersby.

Serengeti4.png“When Ben approached me seeking creative guidance in designing his new book the first thing that piqued my interest was his irrepressible enthusiasm – it was downright infectious.  Before long I was irrevocably drawn into the magical world of African wildlife and the remarkable complexities of Wildebeest migrations,” recalls Liao.

Ben is one of those rare individuals who have been able to transform an intense childhood love for wildlife into a dream fulfilled: studying fascinating migrations around the world.

Serengeti2.png“I hope to bring to life the powerful and intimate experience of my sojourn in Serengeti and the spectacular feat of sheer endurance that is the Wildebeests’ annual migration.  My aim is to cultivate an appreciation and awareness of the intricate beauty of animal life and through this a sensitivity to the need for conservation,” says Battersby.

Ben’s forthcoming book detailing the phenomenon of the Wildebeest migration is a culmination of countless forays into the African savannah and years of compiling invaluable data on the various stages and cycles of the Wildebeests’ journey.

Serengeti3.png“Spending twelve days with Ben on safari in the heart of Africa has been a transformative experience.  Having the creative licence to encapsulate the stunning array of powerful images through the medium of photography and to help Ben ultimately realise his childhood dreams is incredible.”
