Rothelowman Architects

After working briefly in Hong Kong, Rothelowman Architects’ founding principal and Director, Kim Lowman returned to Australia in 1991 to conquer Australia’s architecture world. With over 155 employees across offices in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney as well as international clients from China; Rothelowman Architects is a prominent name that has often been referred to as a paragon of the Australian architecture industry.

Kim believes that the secrets to Rothelowman’s success is a clear business development strategy, flexibility and employing talented and trustworthy employees.

“Our edge comes from the fact that we have repeat clients, a state-of-the-art design process, a thorough understanding of the factors that impact the wider property industry, a willingness to innovate design solutions and a commitment to staff and research”, said Mr Lowman.

As architectural and design studios generally require a suite of compatible skills across all aspects of a project’s delivery, Mr Lowman stresses the importance of impeccable communication skills and nurturing learning environment that is embedded into Rothelowman’s graduate programme.

With a diverse range of projects varying from $5 million to $600 million AUD and a fully integrated design studio led by international designer Matthew Dalby; Rothelowman is fully equipped to maintain an exemplary standard of quality for every project.

“We strongly encourage clients to discuss a site prior to acquisition. It’s generally a partnership approach that converts feasibilities into realities. The notion of an inspirational idea responding to a site that is viable, responsible, and timeless excites us.”

When asked about the challenges Rothelowman faces, Mr Lowman said,” Embracing change is everyone’s challenge. As economic conditions change we make it our business to explore new building typologies to suit a market”.

Mr Lowman strongly emphasised the importance of working with all stakeholders towards achieving a satisfactory outcome for each party and praised the merits of institutions that reward innovation.

“We strongly encourage clients to discuss a site prior to acquisition. It’s generally a partnership approach that converts feasibilities into realities. The notion of an inspirational idea responding to a site that is viable, responsible, and timeless excites us,” said Mr Lowman.

Despite it not being a large project, Rothelowman is most proud of their award-winning work on the “Pillar of Hawthorn” – a respectful interpretation of the rich heritage and timeless nobility that defines Hawthorn. Sandwiched between a heritage church and sensitive interfaces with neighbouring residents; this project resolves all constraints with clarity and lifts the experiences of neighbours, pedestrians and future inhabitants of Hawthorn.

Mr Lowman is excited about the future and believes the best part of his career lies in a journey of constant learning, joy and passion for one’s craft.

Kim Lowman

Despite it not being a large project, Kim is proud of one of their award-winning works “Pillar of Hawthorn” – a respectful interpretation of the rich heritage and timeless nobility that define Hawthorn. Ardently adamant and meticulous in design, the penthouses of Pillar provide a warm array of designs that fully maximise the ability of natural light to complement its apartment’s features.

A complex projection on many levels, the height and proportions compliment the contours of the street podium to allow inhabitants to enjoy spectacular views towards the city over its heritage roofs. The eastern laneway is activated by careful consideration which addresses this intimate frontage. Landscape and pavement improvements, further lift the pedestrian experience, continuing Melbourne’s fascination with laneways.

Inside the Pillar awaits generous, luxurious living spaces one would be proud to call home. This project, by Miura Group, certainly has considered the well being of its residents and will create a development which has the community in mind.
